When Tomorrow Starts Without Me

Person sitting at sunset beside the luminous spiritual presences of a dog and a cat as a symbol of love and companionship after physical goodbye

If you arrived on this page, perhaps you are navigating the physical loss of a beloved animal companion.

Maybe there was a first sunrise without their physical body near.
A first night without their breathing.
A first meal without their gaze.
A first return home without feeling them waiting for you.
A first day when life kept moving, even though a large part of your heart felt as if everything had fallen apart.

When a beloved animal companion physically departs, every new day can feel different.

The world keeps going.
The sun rises again, even when the days may feel gray for us.
Routines try to continue.
People keep talking, working, walking, living, while for us, sometimes even breathing feels difficult.

Deep within you, something has changed.

The phrase “When Tomorrow Starts Without Me” has accompanied many people through moments of grief, absence, and goodbye. For many hearts, its message touches a very tender question: How do I keep living when someone I love deeply is no longer physically by my side?

This page was born from that same intention: to offer you a loving reflection to accompany those difficult days, and the part of your heart that is learning, little by little, how to keep living without ever stopping loving.

Because moving forward does not mean leaving them behind.
And living a new day does not mean loving less or forgetting.

For many years, the text known in Spanish as “Cuando mañana comience sin mí” has circulated in different spaces of grief, comfort, and goodbye.

The original text in English, known as “When Tomorrow Starts Without Me,” is commonly attributed to David M. Romano.

From a place of respect and care, I do not reproduce the full poem or a complete translation on this page.

Instead, I wish to honor the deep message many people have found in it through my own words: a reflection on love, physical absence, the new days, and the bond that continues to accompany us.

There are moments in grief that feel especially difficult.

Coming home empty-handed, without them.
The first sunrise.
The first night.
The first day at home.
The first time you do something you always did with him or her.
The first time you look for their presence and remember that their body is no longer here in the same way.

Sometimes the pain arrives all at once, in a devastating way.

In the emptiness of a routine.
In the silence that hurts.
In the empty spaces.
In a bowl you no longer have to fill.
In a bed that feels too big and lonely.
In a door that no longer opens the same way.
In a gaze your heart is still waiting to find.

When tomorrow begins without their physical presence, it can feel as if the world is asking you to keep going too soon.

But your heart does not have to move at the pace of the world.

In the first days after the physical departure of a beloved animal companion, sometimes it is not about “moving forward.”

Sometimes it is simply about continuing to breathe.
Getting up even when you have no strength.
Drinking water.
Eating something.
Replying to a message.
Caring for other animals at home.
Doing the minimum necessary while your heart tries to understand what happened.

There are moments when even caring for yourself can feel difficult.

And still, sometimes life asks us to function: to take care of responsibilities, to care for their siblings, to open the door, prepare food, move, solve things, and hold the everyday together.

In those moments, perhaps you can try to do it from another place.

Not from pressure.
Not from the obligation to be okay.
Not from the idea that you should already be able to handle everything.

You do not have to be okay just because the world keeps going.
You do not have to be able to handle everything.
You do not have to move through this day as if your heart were not carrying such deep pain.

But from love.

In their honor, I get up.
In their honor, I care for myself.
In their honor, I feed their siblings.
In their honor, I breathe a little deeper.
In their honor, I allow this day to be what it can be.
In their honor, I take one small step, even while my heart still hurts.

From Animals in Spirit Communication, I have perceived many times that our animals do not want their physical departure to mark us through suffering, guilt, or the desire to dim our own light.

They know how much we love them.

And from that love, they want us to continue receiving life, love, care, and companionship.

Not immediately.
Not by force.
Not before the heart is ready.

But they do wish that, little by little, their memory may also become a strength that supports us.

May their life inspire us.
May their love accompany us.
May their teachings continue walking with us.
May their spirit remind us that there is still love to receive, to give, and to share.

Your beloved does not want you to stop living out of love for him or her.

They want that, when your heart can, you may feel life again with the same tenderness, presence, and love they taught you.

And if today you still cannot shine, that is okay.

For now, perhaps it is enough to allow their love to be a small light for this day.

A gentle reason to get up.
An invisible companion to support you.
A reminder that you are not walking into this new tomorrow completely alone.

Because the love you shared did not end.

And although today it hurts deeply, that love can become, little by little, a strength that helps you keep walking.

From my experience as an Animal Communicator, animals in spirit often show us that physical goodbye does not end the bond.

Many times, during sessions, they come close with love to those moments when their family feels they do not know how to move through a new day without their physical body near.

They come close to the difficult mornings.
To the long nights.
To the empty spaces.
To the routines that hurt.
To the moments when their person feels they do not have the strength to get up, breathe, or continue with even the smallest necessary things.

And again and again, I have perceived something very deep: they do not want their physical departure to become a shadow that dims the life of those they love.

Our beloved animals do not want their memory to be only pain.
They do not want love to turn into guilt.
They do not want their physical absence to make their family stop receiving love, companionship, joy, or hope.
They do not want their life to be remembered as a wound impossible to carry.

They want the love you shared to remain a light.

A light that accompanies difficult days.
A light that supports small steps.
A light that reminds you there is still love to receive.
A light that, with time, may open space again for tenderness, calm, and life.

From spirit, they can continue accompanying their family in very loving ways.

They can come close when you wake up.
They can accompany your tears.
They can be present in the silences.
They can send calm in the middle of a heavy day.
They can make themselves felt through a sign, a dream, a memory, a song, a sense of companionship, or a gentle knowing within your heart.

Many times, their presence can feel like a message of love:

“I am with you while you cry.”
“I am close while you breathe.”
“I am here while you find the strength to take the next step.”

I have also felt that our animals wish that, when the heart is ready, we may be able to look at life again with a little more light.

Not because we forget them.
Not because the pain did not matter.
Not because their physical absence stops hurting.

But because their love did not come to extinguish us.

Their love came to teach us.
To open our hearts.
To remind us of tenderness.
To show us presence.
To help us love in deeper ways.

And that love can continue accompanying us forward.

Missing them does not harm them.
Crying for them does not hold them back.
Speaking to them does not tie them down.
Continuing with your life does not break the bond.

The bond remains alive because it is born from love.

And when love is true, it does not ask you to remain stuck in pain in order to prove how much you loved.

True love accompanies.
Supports.
Illuminates.
And, little by little, it can become a gentle strength to keep walking.

Because when tomorrow begins without their physical body near, it does not have to begin without their love.

Maybe today it still does not feel this way.
Maybe it is still too soon.
Maybe this new day still feels heavy, strange, or deeply sad.

And that is okay.

But with time, some new days may begin to feel a little different.

Not necessarily without sadness.
Not necessarily without tears.
Not necessarily without longing.

But perhaps with a little more space to breathe.

There may come a day when a memory makes you smile.
A day when a sign embraces you.
A day when you can speak about him or her with love.
A day when you can look at a photo and feel tenderness alongside the pain.
A day when you realize that their love is still part of your life, even though their physical body is no longer here in the same way.

The new days do not have to erase the days you shared.

They can carry them within.

They can carry their teachings.
Their memories.
Their love.
Their way of accompanying you.
Their imprint on your heart.
Their spiritual presence.
Their unique way of transforming your life.

The life that continues does not have to be a life without their love.

It can be a life that, little by little, learns to carry that love in another way.

Not to forget.
Not to leave behind.
Not to love less.

But to allow everything you lived together to continue walking with you, accompanying you through the new days.

If today it feels hard to begin a new day, be gentle with yourself.

You do not have to be able to handle everything.
You do not have to make sense of everything.
You do not have to turn your pain into something beautiful before its time.
You do not have to feel peace if today what you feel is sadness.
You do not have to know how to continue.

You can begin with something small.

Breathe.
Drink water.
Open a window.
Light a candle.
Write one sentence.
Speak to them from your heart.
Rest for a moment.
Allow the day to be what it can be.

Sometimes continuing does not look like strength.

Sometimes continuing looks like getting up slowly.
Like crying and still breathing.
Like doing only what is necessary.
Like allowing yourself to receive love.
Like remembering that you do not have to go through all of this in one single day.

Your heart will find the way.
And your beloved will accompany you as it does.

On the days when beginning feels difficult, perhaps you do not need to do big things.

Sometimes a small, loving, possible gesture is enough.

✨ You can light a candle in their honor.
✨ Place a photo near you.
✨ Speak to them from your heart.
✨ Write them one sentence.
✨ Care for their siblings as a way of honoring their love.
✨ Drink water and breathe a little deeper.
✨ Open a window and allow a little light to come in.
✨ Do only what is necessary.
✨ Rest when your body asks for it.
✨ Remember that this day does not have to be perfect in order to be moved through with love.

This is not about being okay.
It is not about turning pain into something beautiful.
It is not about proving strength.

It is about allowing love to accompany you, even on a difficult day.

One small gesture.
One breath.
One step.
One moment at a time.

Sometimes, after the physical departure of a beloved animal companion, the desire arises to feel them close again, to listen to what they wish to share, or to understand something about the bond you lived together.

Animals in Spirit Communication can open a loving, intuitive, and respectful space to listen from the heart.

It does not replace your grief process, nor does it seek to turn love into proof.

It is a space to honor the bond, receive whatever is possible from love, and remember that the connection with your beloved animal companion can continue to be present in a deep and subtle way.

When you feel it in your heart, you can learn more about the available sessions and choose the space that may best accompany this moment.

When tomorrow begins without their physical presence, it does not mean it will begin without their love.

The bond you share remains alive, and their presence will continue being with you in a different way.

It lives in what you shared.
In what you learned by their side.
In the memories that still embrace your heart.
In the subtle ways their presence continues accompanying you.
In dreams.
In nature.
In beautiful skies.
In other animals or people.
In the moments when, without explanation, something within you knows they are still close.

Maybe today and tomorrow will hurt.
Maybe today and tomorrow you will miss them.
Maybe today and tomorrow you still will not know how to continue.

But you do not have to walk that tomorrow without love.

Your beloved animal companion will always be part of you, your life, and your story.

And although their physical presence is no longer here in the same way, the love you share remains alive: in your hearts, in the memories you share, in the lessons you left in one another, and in that deep connection that continues to unite you.

May this page embrace your heart, even if only a little.

And when a new day begins, may you remember that you do not have to stop loving in order to keep living.

True love remains.
Accompanies.
Illuminates.
And continues walking with you.

With love,

My name is Erika Apellániz, and I am a Professional Animal Communicator, certified since 2017.

Throughout my path, I have accompanied thousands of animal communication sessions and processes, including many encounters with animals in spirit and families who are navigating grief after the physical loss of a beloved animal companion.

My work with animals in spirit comes from a place of deep respect, love, and sensitivity. For me, each session is a sacred space of listening, where the bond is not seen as something that ended, but as a connection that continues to live in a more subtle, luminous, and loving way.

I accompany these processes with the intention of honoring the story you shared, receiving what is possible from the heart, and remembering that our animals continue to be part of our family, even though their physical presence has changed.

This page was created from that same perspective: as a space of comfort, hope, and love for those who deeply miss a beloved one in spirit.
