The Rainbow Bridge

Dog, cat, rabbit, guinea pig, bird, and horse looking at a rainbow at sunset as a symbol of the Rainbow Bridge

If you arrived on this page, perhaps you are going through the physical loss of a beloved animal companion.

Maybe you miss their presence, their gaze, their sounds, the way they accompanied you, their routines, their body close to yours, or that unique way in which they filled your life with love.

When a beloved animal companion physically departs, the heart may look for images, words, or symbols that can help hold a little of the pain. For many people, The Rainbow Bridge has become one of those images: a symbol of hope, love, rest, and reunion.

It is not meant to erase grief or tell you how you should feel. It is also not meant to impose a specific belief. Rather, it is a loving way to imagine that the bond with your beloved animal companion does not end with their physical goodbye.

The Rainbow Bridge is a symbolic image that many people associate with the loving place animals go to after physically departing.

For some people, it represents a spiritual space of rest, wellbeing, and light.

For others, it is a metaphor for the love that continues, the bond that remains alive, and the hope of a reunion beyond physical life.

It can also be a way of visualizing our loved ones free from pain, illness, old age, or tiredness, surrounded by love and wrapped in peace.

Each person may experience this symbol in a different way.

You can take from it only what feels good for your heart today.

For many years, the text known as “The Rainbow Bridge” circulated as an anonymous poem and was shared in many spaces dedicated to grief after the loss of an animal companion.

Today, it is commonly attributed to Edna Clyne-Rekhy, so, from a place of respect for her authorship, I do not reproduce the full poem on this page.

Instead, I wish to honor the deep meaning of this symbol through my own words, as a way to lovingly support you if you are experiencing the physical loss of a beloved animal companion.

From my experience as an Animal Communicator, The Rainbow Bridge can be understood as a poetic and loving way to name that space of light where many animals arrive after physically departing.

Over the years, in sessions with animals in spirit, I have perceived again and again a profoundly beautiful place: a space of immense love, peace, calm, and freedom.

A place where there is no longer pain.
Where there is no longer illness.
Where there is no longer physical tiredness.
Where they can feel whole, free, and surrounded by loving light.

Many animals show themselves doing what they love: running, resting, playing, exploring, accompanied by other loved ones, or simply enjoying a very deep peace.

I have also perceived that, from that space, they can continue visiting us.

They can come close when they miss us.
They can accompany us when we need them.
They can make their presence known through sensations, memories, dreams, signs, emotions, or that subtle certainty that they are still near.

And something very important: love does not bind them or hold them back.

Missing them does not hurt them.
Loving them does not keep them stuck.
Remembering them does not prevent them from being at peace.

True love is not heavy.
True love does not chain.
True love unites through freedom.

When a beloved animal companion physically departs, something within us and in our daily life changes forever.

The space where they slept feels different.
The home may feel quieter and emptier.
Routines transform.
The heart, sometimes without even realizing it, looks for signs that this love is still present.

The Rainbow Bridge reminds us, in a symbolic way, that true love is not destroyed by physical death.

The bond you built together — through caresses, gazes, play, care, lessons, goodbyes, companionship, and presence — continues to be part of both of you.

Your beloved animal is not “just a pet.”

They are family.
They are a companion.
They are a teacher.
They are love in a unique and unrepeatable form.

And even though their physical body is no longer with you in the same way, everything you shared continues to live in your hearts, in your memories, and in the footprints they left in your lives.

Their spirit is still alive.

Allow yourself to feel what you feel.

You do not have to be strong all the time.
You do not have to “get over it” quickly.
You do not have to explain why it hurts so much.
You do not have to justify the love you feel.

Grief for a beloved animal companion can be deep, intense, and very real.

Sometimes it hurts because that love was present in the most ordinary moments: waking up, coming home, going to sleep, eating, walking, working, breathing through everyday life.

That is why, when they physically depart, we miss them from the deepest part of our heart. Because we do not only miss their body or the life we shared with them; we also miss everything they made us feel: loved in the purest way, fully accepted, accompanied, seen, and transformed by their love and their teachings.

Honoring that love is also a way of continuing to love.

Sometimes, after the physical passing of a beloved animal companion, the desire arises to feel them close again, listen to what they wish to share, or understand something about the bond you lived together.

Animals in Spirit Communication can open a loving, intuitive, and respectful space to listen from the heart.

It does not replace your grieving process, nor does it seek to turn love into a test.

It is a space to honor the bond, receive what is possible from love, and remember that the connection with your beloved animal can remain present in a deep and subtle way.

When you feel it in your heart, you can learn more about the available sessions and choose the space that best supports this moment.

The Rainbow Bridge may be an image of hope, but the true bridge lives in the love you share.

That bridge was built in every gaze, every caress, every routine, every act of care, every moment of companionship, and every instant in which your loved one reminded you what it means to love unconditionally.

Your beloved animal companion will always be part of your life and your story.

And even though their physical presence is no longer here in the same way, the love you share remains alive: in your hearts, in your memories, in your lessons, and in the subtle ways their presence may continue accompanying you.

May this page offer a small embrace to your heart.

And may thinking of The Rainbow Bridge remind you that true love is never lost: it transforms, remains, and continues illuminating the bond that unites you.

With love,

My name is Erika Apellániz, and I am a Professional Animal Communicator, certified since 2017.

Throughout my path, I have accompanied thousands of Animal Communication sessions and processes, including many encounters with animals in spirit and families going through grief after the physical loss of a beloved animal companion.

My work with animals in spirit is born from a place of deep respect, love, and sensitivity. To me, each session is a sacred space of listening, where the bond is not seen as something that ended, but as a connection that remains alive in a more subtle, luminous, and loving way.

I accompany these processes with the intention of honoring the shared story, receiving what is possible from the heart, and remembering that our beloved animals continue to be part of our family, even when their physical presence has changed.

This page was created from that same perspective: as a space of comfort, hope, and love for those who deeply miss a loved one in spirit.
